So everyday I work with Sonia from Paraguay and Hichem from Algeria. Sonia, a devout Catholic and Hichem, a Muslim were hanging out in reception today. Hichem, unmarried at 30, gives me the impression that he wants to marry me. This could possibly be because he has already asked me to move there because "it's so beautiful, you will love it". He's been here a week!
Hichem and I started talking about another guest here who is gay and very flamboyant and he said there are none like him in Algeria. I think he meant none are very open about it but I could just be interpretting that incorrectly. I tried to get across to him that here, in NY at least, there is no such thing as "normal". He then asked me if "you lay down with woman".
Moving on...Sonia got involved in the conversation and we ended up talking about religion. I won't go into the major points, 1-there are too many, 2-im too tired to remember them all, 3-i didnt really understand them all in the broken English.
Pretty much Hichem was fitting me for a hejab. Telling me how nice I would look with it and literally measuring me for it. He encouraged me to "just read a little..see how you like" (in reference to the Quran). So there we are a Muslim single man, a devout South American Catholic and a lapsed Catholic/Jew. All 10 mins before the end of my shift. My head hurts from playing charades with them and trying to understand them.
It briefly reminded me of when I was 13 and was almost sold for 13 camels when my mom and I were in Palestine. How I used to look back and wonder how my life would have been.

I wish I was there to see the three of you in such dynamic conversation. Isn't it funny how religion can play such a huge role in people's lives. I'm loving the blog-and glad you didn't get sold for 10 camels! lol
